IO’s Story

My husband adopted IO at 3 months old from the local shelter. She was born in the shelter and spent the first few months of her life there. The first time they went for a walk she sat down every few steps and cried. She had never experienced walks before and didn’t know what was going on.

I will never forget the first time I met IO. I was used to high energy, rough and tumble dogs. I lived with a border collie, Cowboy, and a golden retriever, Sage. A tomboy golden retriever/Rottweiler mix, CoCo, lived next door. I saw IO, and said, “Hi, IO! Hey there, aren’t you cute?” She just stood there looking at me. I was mystified and tried even harder to make friends with her. I spoke to her in an even higher-pitched, sing-song voice. I picked up her toy, a little brown horse that whinnied, squeezed it and threw it to her. She looked horrified and let the horse hit her, before giving me an even dirtier look–if that is possible–as though I threw it at her before running and hiding behind her dad. I thought, what is wrong with that dog, what kind of dog doesn’t play with her toys? Not the most auspicious start. I laugh when I look back at that. I was used to gregarious dogs, and IO is a little shy and much more reserved. Once she knows you, she will love you forever, but she needs a little time and space to warm up to you. She doesn’t like a lot of commotion and must have thought I was demented. I couldn’t have made more mistakes in that first meeting if I tried. Thankfully, it didn’t stop us from bonding. Her and I now have a special relationship and she will spend the rest of her life looking after me.

Before I began dating her dad, my husband, he left to visit his family for the holidays. Her and I spent Christmas Day together. We went for a long walk, I played with her and gave her treats. I tried my best to spoil her because I knew how much she was missing her dad. I was too! It wasn’t long after that that we started dating, I adopted Jack, and the rest, as they say, is history.

IO is very sweet, petrified of thunder storms, has a sensitive stomach, allergies, loves swimming and hates mornings. She hates commotion and we call her the fun wrecker, because when the other dogs play too much, either with their toys or each other, she charges into the group, barking, and tells them to stop. She is a loving dog and I enjoy every moment that I spend with her.
