Baby Titten’s Story
Baby Titten became our first cat and first “together” pet after we answered an ad in the paper for “Free Kittens”. She was a handful as a kitten. She immediately climbed the walls when we brought her home, literally. Her intelligence led her to be curious about everything. In order to figure out her world she interacted with everything head-on. People would say to me, “oh, she’s just being a kitten.” I grew up with kittens. This was not normal kitten behavior. They had no idea. She was fearless… and relentless. I still have scars from those kitten days.
She was so naughty that she had 4 baths with in the first 6 months of her life, and in case you are thinking she enjoys them, think again. Mostly the baths were required due to some sort of issue that took place with her kitty litter, such as walking under it while we were changing it, stepping in it, etc.
The first time we left her for the weekend, we took the dogs with us, and she cried the whole night. We came home and she has been so sweet ever since. Over the years, she has mellowed considerably.
However, she is a little fighter and will not give up without a fight. She detests the vet to the point of absurdity. I went to visit her after she had been spayed. She immediately came to door of the cage and rubbed against me making little “buurrupt” noises and purring, sweet as pie. As soon as any of the vet staff walked by her entire disposition would change, the hair on her back would go up, she would hiss and growl and bat at them. I was laughing, but they weren’t. To this day, when we go to the vet, she goes into high alert, positioning herself where she can best survey her surroundings, and then switches into attack mode as soon as they come in the room. The sounds she makes are crazy, she skips hisses and growls and goes right into this horrid low gagging sound. She scares me! I will say though that she will tolerate quite a bit more from me than anyone else. Although she still has her limits, she will put up quite a bit from me before she snaps.
She is still relentless and will often “bully” Dixie off of her little dog bed so that she can lay on it. She waits for hours if necessary and the very moment Dixie moves she swoops in and steals the spot. If you try to make her move, she will complain loudly and make herself limp.
She loves to chase strings. We had a string from a pair of pajamas that we held onto for years, through several moves. She would drag that thing everywhere. She was so obsessive about it that we would have to hide it after awhile. She will sometimes be so desperate that she chases the fray on my old beat-up jeans as I am walking.
After the arrival of our Little One, Baby Titten was jealous and showing far too much interest in everything baby. My parents took her in and she is adapting to her new surroundings quite well. I miss her, but it is a relief that she is getting the attention she needs and Cheyenne is not there to smash her.
